There are two versions of this book. One is a monumental Japanese Stab Version. The other is a smaller Drum Leaf bound edition.

Suess and Canada Glaciers are found in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica, an area that is about a 1 hour helicopter flight from McMurdo Station, the largest research base in Antarctica. The Dry Valleys is unique on the continent because it receives almost no precipitation. So there is no snow accumulation at all. The two glaciers flow (glaciers are moving bodies of ice) into Lake Hoare from accumulation zones much further away. Due to the unique geology, lack of snow accumulation, and close proximity to McMurdo, the Dry Valleys is one of the most researched areas on the continent. The glaciers have seen significant recession and thinning in recent years.

I was lucky enough to spend 2 days wandering around Lake Hoare with my collaborator Todd Anderson. There is a small research camp at Lake Hoare. The photographs in this book were made in about a 12 hour period from early afternoon until 2 or 3 AM (the sun doesn't set in November). We had the most incredible saturated light, which is unusual at that time of year. It is usually very sunny and harsh. It was truly one of the most Sublime experiences in a landscape I have ever had. The book is an effort to take someone through that landscape and that experience with me. The trajectory of the book is linear geographically, meaning the sequence is mostly in line with the route we walked.

Lake Hoare is about 1 hour flight by helicopter from McMurdo station. It is in an area known as the dry valleys that is an area where a great deal of research takes place. This project was made possible through the NSF Antarctic Artists and Writers Program
